Gov. Jerry Brown signs California gun restriction

You Think?

Global News

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California will become the first state that allows family members to ask a judge to remove firearms from a relative who appears to pose a threat, under legislation Gov. Jerry Brown said Tuesday he had signed.

The bill was proposed by several Democrats and responds to a deadly rampage in May near the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Supporters had said such a measure could have prevented the attacks, winning out over critics who said it would erode gun rights.

Law enforcement authorities in Connecticut, Indiana and Texas can seek a judge’s order allowing them to seize guns from people they deem to be a danger.

The new California law gives law enforcement the same option and extends it to family members.

Northlands expands no smoking policy to include e-cigarettes

Right!

Global News

EDMONTON – One of Edmonton’s biggest organizations is taking a stand when it comes to using e-cigarettes on its properties.

Northlands recently revamped its smoking policies, and is now banning e-cigarette use from all its facilities.

“We were looking at the overall guest experience,” said Jennifer Sheehan, a spokesperson for Northlands. “From a guest perspective, smoke is smoke.”

The group made the decision after communicating with his major tenants.

“As an NHL venue – all of the NHL venues are now prohibiting e-cigarettes, across the board – so, we’re fitting that in at Rexall Place and then doing it across the entire Northlands campus.”

Sheehan explained there’s an education period that comes before implementing any new policy, but that Northlands will now begin enforcing the e-cigarette smoking ban.

The organization is sending out reminders to visitors on social media.

Farm honours Derek Jeter by carving his likeness into 5-acre corn maze

Global News

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – As far as corny Derek Jeter tributes go, this one will be tough to beat.

A farm in central New Jersey carved an image of the New York Yankees captain and a thank you message to him into its five-acre corn maze. The VonThun Farm in South Brunswick is about 55 miles south of Yankee Stadium.

“Thanks Captain Clutch” is carved into the maze, along with a baseball with Jeter’s No. 2 on it. Farm owner Cindy VonThun said the maze will be open from Sept. 20 through Halloween.

“This was just something totally different,” she said. “To walk out in the field and to be on a path and to say, ‘I’m in Derek Jeter’s chin,’ it’s pretty cool.”

Jeter is retiring after 19 seasons with the Yankees. He has been honoured at Major League ballparks around the country this year, including by former President…
